Dr. Seuss said “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” I’ve been trying to remind myself of this ever since Duckie died a little over two months ago (8/11). Duckie came to DRNA in Spring 2006 because of paralysis. Thanks to DRNA, he received acupuncture and could walk by the time he came to live with us in the Fall of 2006. We continued acupuncture treatments, but he never lost the little wobble. It didn't slow him down at all. When Yolanda McIntyre brought him to our home, he took off as soon as he got out of the car. Checking out the place. She brought three dogs, but we knew immediately that he was a keeper. He had such a great spirit. Duckie truly was a star--a friend included him in a painting even. He was such a character--inspiring smiles everywhere he went. A therapy dog for 5 years, he especially loved children and was part of a reading program at elementary schools, but he was very sensitive to the elderly as well. When my mother was in rehab, her roommate fell in love with Duckie. Every time I visited, Duckie would lie down next to her and wouldn't budge until it was time to leave.

We miss him so much. It still seems strange without him. My husband Bob has lost his "supervisor" when he's out working in the yard, and the critters come close to the house now that Duckie isn't patrolling the perimeter every day. But we are grateful he was in our lives for six years and appreciate that DRNA gave him the second chance that made that possible.
