Biography
DRNA received a call one day from a local animal shelter about a dachshund mix who had been returned twice to them due to what they assumed was a sever allergic skin issue. Millie was bald from her front legs to her tail, itchy, had several large cysts and a body covered in a nasty yeast infection. She was overweight (45lbs), depressed and for her age very lethargic. Due to this they were going to put her down if DRNA didn’t take her as they couldn’t adopt her out again. Millie was picked up that day and taken to our Vet to come up with a treatment plan. Bloodwork showed Millie didn’t have allergies, she had very low thyroid levels (google low thyroid in dogs and she had all the symptoms). So, she started taking thyroid pills and medication/baths for her yeast infection. To everyone’s surprise in a few months all her hair had grown back, the cyst drained and went away, lost weight and she became a lot more active and a happier dog. It took a while longer to totally clear her yeast infection, but she has now been yeast free for a month, healthy and ready for her new home. Millie will require a daily thyroid pill (about $.09 a day) and skin monitoring for any recurring yeast issues, in order to catch it early.
DNA shows Millie is a dachshund mix… 50% Dachshund and 50% various other breeds. It shows one of her great grandparents is a Mini Pinscher and another is a Siberian Husky. The other 3 just show mix breed but we think there must be some Basset Hound in there, as she is built and moves like one.
Millie is a absolutely fantastic dog …..loves everyone she meets and they love her. She listens very well and will stick by you if outside of the fenced area. But Millie loves being outside chasing squirrels and birds so will need a fenced yard in her forever home. She’s house-trained, not a big barker and gets along well with all the smaller dachshunds in her foster home. Millie will need a dog buddy in her forever home but isn’t really a fan of dogs much larger than her. She sleeps on a dog bed at night, no need to crate her and is happiest if next to you on the sofa in the evening. Her only fault is that when giving her a treat she can unintentionally nip a finger. We have been working on teaching her to be gentle, but she is just so excited to get a treat that it is safer just to toss it to her (or open palm). And after years of being poked and prodded due to her skin issues, she can be a little grumpy when messing with her feet. But this is getting better now that she has healed. Therefore, NO young children in her future home.

So, if you’re a big lover of dachshunds, Millie is a big dachshund to love and she will love you right back. We hate to let her go but she deserves a forever home to call her own.

*Mileage restriction will be waived if approved adopter is willing to come to Virginia Beach to pick her up.
