Mr. Darcy is a perky 11-yr old who is looking for a caring, patient person with a generous spirit willing to give him a second chance at life. He came to us when his elderly owner could no longer care for him. He weighed 28lbs and could barely walk. Since coming to DRNA, he has been on a diet and exercise program and has reached his goal weight of 16.2lbs! He has a new pep and energy, enjoys car rides, walks well on a leash, loves to explore the woods at his foster home, and play fetch with his tennis ball. Mr. Darcy prefers single women (he did spend 10 of his 11 years living with just one person), and would do best with someone who works from home or is retired. He will be a perfect companion to someone with a low-key lifestyle who will enjoy hanging out at home with their new best friend. A fenced yard is preferred. He gets along well with 3 small dogs at his foster home. He can be protective/possessive of his person and his toys. Adopters should be experienced with managing resource guarding. Mr. Darcy does need supervision with housetraining. He will use puppy pee pads placed in a designated area, but he needs an experienced adopter who is familiar with dachshunds and is willing to give the attention you would need to train a puppy. Mr. Darcy has a clean bill of health in all areas except...he has a tendency to grow recurring calcium oxalate bladder stones. While it definitely can be a serious condition, it is very manageable: He must only eat Hill's Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Urinary Care Chicken Flavor Dry Dog Food served with extra water for increased hydration. He can also have the same brand of canned food mixed in He must take two medications to help prevent the stones from forming. (He happlily takes them in either a mini-mashmallow or disolved in his food.) He will need x-rays and urinalysis done twice per year to detect any stones. If they are caught when they are small they can be flushed out rather than require surgery. *** Mr. Darcy is being fostered in Maryland. All things considered, local adopters will be given preference to facilitate a home visit. Applicants must be willing to drive to Ellicott City, Maryland (10 miles south of Baltimore) to meet and adopt him.***. |
