Biography
Duke is a beautiful, dappled dachshund tipping the scales at 19+ lbs. His coat is the typical black and tan dachshund coloring with dapple overlaid on all the black. He has a slight blue spot on his left eye that gives him a bit of a wall-eyed look, a slight under bite, and is very gentled natured and slow moving. My family has begun referring to him as "Shrek" because he reminds us of the big gentle, cartoon character.
Duke came most recently from a home where he was crated 20+ hours a day; we aren't sure of his situation before that. He is very docile and sometimes has trouble determining what is expected of him. He is often confused as to whether to follow the other dogs or submit to me and my husband. He is a submissive/nervous piddler, but is doing well when we use avoidance techniques when we first enter the house or interact with him. He is currently in a home with two other dachshunds and is socializing and learning how to be a normal dog again. He is not crated at all now, has free run of the home and sleeps in a dog bed in the bedroom. He has bonded very well with my husband. He rarely barks.
Duke loves to be around people and has no issues with others dogs or cats. He has shown no food or toy aggression but will use his larger size to push the smaller dogs around if left unchecked. He loves playing with toys and chasing a ball and he voluntarily sits up on his hind end to beg for treats. He walks well on a leash and enjoys regular exercise.
Duke would do best in home with a set routine where he could quickly learn exactly what is expected of him. He would be fine as an only dog, but would benefit from the socialization and leadership of another dog. Because he is nervous and so uncertain about his behavior, he will initially require patience and calm voices.
