Baby Mabel couldn’t be any cuter if she tried!! She was born on Dec 15th 2015 with 7 other siblings however three did not survive. Her mom is a full Dachshund and her dad was the neighbor Beagle. Three pups were placed in homes leaving Mabel and another. The family originally was going to keep Mabel. About a month after being born they noticed that she was walking funny and something was wrong. They took her to the vet for an exam and x-rays, continued to work with her, and consulted with a specialist at a University Vet School. Five months later the family decided they were not prepared or capable of caring for her special needs so they looked for someone who could take her and give her the life they weren’t able to.
Mabel made her way to her current foster home in MO after Dachshund Rescue of North America committed to her care and finding a perfect home for this special baby. Mabel was taken to the University of MO where she was seen by a neurological specialist who, after a thorough examination, felt Mabel had either contracted some kind of infection either while still inside mom or at birth or she was born with a spinal deformity. Mabels back legs are very stiff and fold under her facing forward. The specialist said Mabel does have feeling in her hind end but does not seem to be in any pain and did not feel the rear leg stiffness would ever go away. We aren’t sure either but will be taking her for specialized treatments such as acupuncture and cold laser therapy to at least try and see what happens.
What is Mabel like? Well, in my eyes, she’s just perfect ? She is now 6 months old and loves to play with anyone who will play with her. She plays tug of war, chases after and runs from the other pups, and even entertains herself by throwing toys in the air and then running after them. She will also run off with your slippers if she can! If she is on a surface where she has traction, such as carpet or outside in the yard, she can actually get herself up on her hind legs and just kind of hops but is able to do so at a pretty good speed. She is also very fast at scooting right along on slick surfaces such as hardwood or tiled floors. She can even pull herself up steps but only has a couple to deal with here. Nothing slows this little girl down and her disability doesn’t seem to phase her one bit. Her spirit is just as beautiful as she is. At feeding time, she really shows you how fast she can go. She can’t get to her feeding spot quick enough. She loves to be with her person and will bounce with excitement to greet you in the morning, to get up to where you are, or to welcome you home. She gives sweet little kisses and looks up at you with a most adoring face. I had her in the kiddy pool one time so far and she thought I was trying to drown her. I will continue to work with her in the pool and hope she gets used to it to where we can focus more on her swimming and her back legs. She does have a little Beagle bark and doesn’t hesitate to alert you when someone is at the front door or in letting you know her displeasure that you are leaving her. Her bladder does have to be manually expressed which is a bit difficult as she has a very soft bladder that is hard to find. If not expressed well, she does tend to leave good size puddles and trails of urine. Baby Mabel is such a joy to have and just makes you smile and laugh…..a lot. We are working on getting a cart that fits her and will see just how well she can zoom around with that. Once her vetting is completed and we see what happens with the therapy, Mabel will be ready for a family of her very own. I can only say that whoever makes her a part of their family will be very lucky to have her in their lives. She will bring much joy and laughter and will show you the true meaning of what it is to overcome obstacles and live a very happy life. Please help us with donation to get Mabel a cart and also Acupuncture & Chiropractic sessions. Thank you
